Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How much does it cost?
Superstructures is free to use!

Are there videos demonstrating how to use each structure?
Yes, there are. We've made a whole page just for this. Please visit our How To Videos page. For more videos highlighting new features and instructional ideas, visit our YouTube Channel.

What grades and subjects does Superstructures support?
Superstructures is built for classrooms where students can read and write and accordingly, we are typically used by 3rd-12th grade teachers. Early elementary teachers may find the platform a bit too complex to have students join and participate, although some report success in early elementary by using the platform as a whole class on an interactive whiteboard. Superstructures can also be utilized in higher education, PD and corporate settings- anywhere that group collaboration exists.

The platform is not subject-specific; you can use Superstructures with any subject that benefits from critical thinking and collaboration.

How do I create a teacher account and get started?
1. Create an account by navigating to superstructures.io and click Sign Up.
2. You can create an account with Google SSO or your own email if you prefer.
3. Once you create an account, you can either Create a structure or preview the Sample Structures to get an idea of what you can make.

How do I create an activity?
Navigate to app.superstructures.io, select the activity you wish to create, and enter the relevant information. For more information about how to create each activity, consult the How To button or see our YouTube channel. Once you click “Create [x] Structure”, your activity will be live. Students can join the activity by sharing with them the URL or having them go to soops.io and entering the code displayed above the activity.

If you need ideas, you can also use our AI Structure Creator to generate structures for you based on your topic. You can edit any of the structures it creates before you send it to your students.

Does the product work on Chromebooks, tablets, and mobile devices?
Students can participate in Superstructures activities on any Chromebook, laptop, or tablet. We do not support participation with mobile devices yet. Some features may not work perfectly on tablets/iPads.

Superstructures is blocked on my school network. What do I need to do?
We have a full set of IT Documentation that can be shared with anyone at your school or district level. It includes how to whitelist the site to make sure it's not blocked by your school's filter, and it also includes the types of safety & security information that IT departments may ask for when making that decision. Access it here: IT Setup Guide

Student Accounts

How do students log in and access activities?
Simply open the activity and share with students the URL or have students go to soops.io and enter the code displayed above the activity. Students do not create accounts or have to "log in" beyond typing their first name.

Can I import my existing class rosters from [Google Classroom / School LMS]?
We do not support the creation of student accounts at this time. Students enter an alias which we associate their responses with but that does not persist when they join a new activity.

How is student data protected and kept private?
We do not possess any personally identifiable information from students. Additionally all teacher account information is encrypted at rest and in transit. Please see our terms & conditions, privacy policy, and 3rd party data sharing agreement for more details.

Using Superstructures

I teach more than one section of the same class. How can I reuse structures?
We have a "Replicate Structure" option that will duplicate the entire structure setup (including any titles, labels, and dots written in Spectrum and Dot Plot) without copying any student contributions. It's perfect for reusing the same activity with multiple classes.

You can access Replicate Structure while viewing any structure (including a sample!) by clicking the ... menu in the top left. You can also access it from the Gear icon while viewing structures on the teacher dashboard.

Do I need to project the activity?
It is up to you! Some teachers like to project their view at the front of the class. Students will be able to join, participate, and see peer contributions to an activity from their own device, though it can be helpful for the teacher to navigate and facilitate a discussion from a projected screen at the front of the room. It is important to note that if you enter Teacher View on a projected screen, information about students to highlight or discuss will be visible.

What if students write inappropriate comments?
Our AI oversight tools have a filter on inappropriate content. In most cases, students will see a message saying their contribution was inappropriate and we will ask them to revise. In case an inappropriate comment has not been caught, you can delete any contribution from any student manually by clicking on it and then hitting “Delete this entry” or the circle X icon.

How are badges awarded?
The badge system is handled by an AI system that operates on a rubric we've programmed, based on the grade level you select when you create the structure.

Features

What does the info on Teacher View represent?
Teacher View has both a left panel and a bottom panel. The left panel has Class Progress (default), Activity, and Awards views.

“Class Progress” lists all of your students, with dots measuring the length of their longest contribution. Click on a student’s name to see all of their contributions, listed with dots measuring their length and icons for any Badges they were awarded. Click on a contribution to highlight it in the structure.

Activity: This view lists every contribution, in the order they were created, along with badges they have won. Click on a contribution to highlight it in the structure.

Awards view: This will show a list of students who have won each Badge available in the structure.

Bottom: On the bottom panel are class insights, provided by Soop, your AI assistant. You can refresh any of the class patterns, suggestions for discussion, or students to highlight. You can also query Soop with any question about activity happening on the board.

How do I set a timer?
Click the timer button on top of the activity and select the amount of time. The timer will appear on student screens and notify them as time runs down.

How does Anonymous Mode work?
When you toggle on Anonymous Mode, students will not be able to see names on any entries; all entries will be labeled as "student." The hope is to facilitate more honest participation in cases where being able to see who is writing what entry might be detrimental. The teacher can still see student names and get insights about student participation in Teacher View.

How does Individual Mode work?
Users will only be able to see their own entries; all other entries will be hidden from view. This applies to teachers as well; teachers will not be able to see any entries other than their own while Individual Mode is on. Once Individual Mode is turned off, all entries will be visible. If you need to count student entries while Individual Mode is turned on, just ask Soop! He will report the correct data for queries like "list all students with how many entries they have" or "how many entries does Zoe have."
